Questions about speech therapy
Why would a speech therapist visit for swallowing?
Speech-language pathologists are the specialists in swallowing. After a stroke or with progressive illness, unsafe swallowing leads to aspiration pneumonia. The therapist evaluates and teaches safe techniques and food textures.
Can speech therapy help with dementia?
It does not reverse dementia, but it gives patients and caregivers practical strategies for communication, routines and safety that reduce frustration on both sides.
How long is a course of speech therapy?
It depends on the diagnosis and goals set with the physician. Progress is re-evaluated regularly and the plan is adjusted.
Is a physician order required?
Yes. Like all home health services, speech therapy is provided under a physician's plan of care.
